Frequently Asked Questions about the Project:

Why?!
With the emergence of digital technology as a means to quickly and affordably take on a long term photography project, coupled with an interest in the subtleties of the ageing process, I started photographing myself every day.

Is it real?!
Yes! It is real. I post every single photo from the project on this website.

Are you still doing it?
Yes! The video that I posted is Part 1 of this work in progress. It shows the dates Junuary 11th 2000 - July 31st, 2006. I have taken a photograph every day since I made the video and I will take a photo today, and tomorrow and until the day I die. I plan to release another video on the 10 year anniversary and then a new video every 5years after that until we reach the final conclusion.

Have you missed any days?
Yes, I have. In total I believe the number is around 22 (Plus 5 in a hard drive crash). In the beginning of the project I didn't think it would actually be possible to do it every single day so I would forget, or go away without the camera. As time went on it became more important and more routine. I haven't missed a day in over 3 years.

Are you sad?
Why do you never smile?

I am generally a very happy person. I do smile, just not when I take the photograph for this project. I like to call this a control.

How old are you?
Where do you live?
What do you do?

I am 27 years old (I started the project when I was 19 years old) and I live in Brooklyn, New York. I am a professional photographer.

What kind of camera do you use/lighting?
How do you get your face in the exact same spot?

I used the Sony-DSR-PC100 from 20000111-20040930. I replaced that camera with the Kyocera Finecam SL300R on 20041001. Both of these cameras have flip screens that allow me to see myself, thus an easy way to consistently line myself up. I only use available light, usually from an incandescent light bulb or halogen. Never flash on camera.

Where do you take your photo?
I usually always take my photo in my home. If I am traveling I take my camera with me and photograph myself wherever I might be staying.

Does anybody else do this?
Of course. It was definitely an original idea in my head, and I was doing the project for over 3 years until I found out somebody else was up to it too… and for longer! Check out Jonathan Keller. He has a great website and a wonderful compilation of daily photo projects as well as other truly awesome obsessive photography projects.

Do you mind if I do this?
No of course not! It's an awesome project and you will impress all of your friends. Send me a link if you make it longer than a year.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Video:

What video editing software did you use to make the movie?
The version you see online was done with Windows Movie Maker and the DVD was made in Adobe Premiere.

Is it in chronological order?
Yes it is. My hair has a tendency to look different on a daily basis. I think this is why it might look like the photos are not in order.

Where can I get the music by Carly Comando?
Check out Carly's myspace page. www.myspace.com/carlycomando You can stream the track there and find out more information.
